Throughout my professional career as a realtor, I had the pleasure to work with many older adult clients whom I helped to find amazing homes in 55+ communities.

Most of the times my clients were in the process to down size their current home due to  1) children moved out and 2)looking to buy a manageable home (i.e., single-story homes).

But let’s don’t forget that a majority of older adults move to active adult communities to avoid isolation that often comes with aging and living at home alone.

Now, before I talk more in depth about my most favorite retirement communities in Gainesville and Haymarket, I wanted to take some time and talk about things to look for in a retirement community in general.

My goal in this blog post is to provide you with valuable information that can help you to find your dream home in the adult community of your choice.

So now let’s move on and list what you should look for in a retirement community:

1) Health, Recreation, and Exercise

Social activities are vital for any successful retirement community. You may want to speak to current residents and ask them what activities are offered and how much they are enjoying it. Also, see what shopping opportunities are available, if there are local church services, or how to use local transportation if necessary.

2) Nearby Health Care

A lot of times we neglect the importance of good health care facilities close to where you live. No matter what your current health status is, you will still need a health care providers close to your community. Check with retirement community and request detailed information about area medical providers before you make your final decision.

3) Foster Active Lifestyle

As I mentioned earlier in the post, most older adults may choose a retirement community to avoid isolation and look for an active lifestyle. Reach out to the community to make sure you can live as you choose. If you’re a pet owner, you want to make sure that pets are allowed, or you want to ensure that family members can stay long term.

Now, moving on, I’d like to give you more specifics on why I picked Heritage Hunt Golf Club & Community and Regency at Dominion Valley as my favorite 55+ communities in Gainesville and Haymarket.

Below, you’ll see an overview about both communities; however, I will also attach a FREE eBook with more specific information for each community.

#1  Heritage Hunt Retirement Community in Gainesville,VA.

This active adult community is a 55+ active living community in the Gainesville and Haymarket area of Virginia, with more than 1,860 homes and 3,300 residents. It is located 32 miles west of Washington DC between Bull Run Mountain and the Manassas National Battlefield Park. The location appeals to its residents because it is so accessible to the world-class attractions of Washington D.C. but is also on the edge of the beautiful Virginia horse and wine country – the best of both worlds.

An online examination of Heritage Hunt also reveals that the community has been identified as the best retirement community in America by the Senior Housing Council and it was a two-time winner of best designed adult community.

When you first drive into the community, you will be immediately struck with its attractive appearance. The entry road offers a long and unfolding view of the community.

This view is DOMINATED by its elegantly landscaped golf course with the profile of Bull Run Mountain off to the West. The way its wooded areas, open lands and housing are all so well integrated makes it a real visual pleasure to drive or walk around. It is like a large park with people living in it. You will not see an active living community that has such a large and lovely pastoral appearance. (Another reason why I love it!) The main reason why Heritage Hunt is #1 on my list is because the homes are not as cramped as some in many other senior communities. Many models have open floor plans and EVERY home has master suites, kitchen and baths all on the MAIN LEVEL! Now that’s what I call retirement living..!

#2  Regency Retirement Community at Dominion Valley Country Club in Haymarket

The Regency at Dominion Valley’s 30,000 square-foot clubhouse contains all of the features active adults come to expect in an upscale, golf course community.

Residents can easily stay in shape by visiting the large, state-of-the-art fitness center, which features cardiovascular and strength training equipment, an aerobics studio, spinning class and yoga room. The community’s heated indoor pool lets swimmers train year-round, though residents will also enjoy having an outdoor swimming pool that is open seasonally. Two lighted tennis courts and well-maintained walking trails also promote outdoor living, as does the beautiful 18-hole golf course, which was designed by Arnold Palmer and the Palmer Course Design Company. Residents of Regency at Dominion Valley enjoy active resort-style living.

Personally what I admire most about this community is the large variety of amenities, social clubs, community activities, and two on-site restaurants, residents may find few reasons to venture beyond the community gates. Yet whether planning an on site activity or an excursion within the surrounding community, a full-time activities director is available to assist residents in making their plans.
